Simply put… YOU DON’T. The best thing you can do to get started right is HIRE A TEACHER… it will save you time and money later on.
get a book from the library on it. that way you’ll be learning for free and can always have it there and pick it up and learn when you want. i got bored of being taught so i taught myself.
I started learning when I was a freshman in college and have been playing for almost a year – all self taught (and I’ve caught up with a lot of people my age who have been playing for a while… although it’s a little unfair for me to say that, when I am studying for a college music degree
What I did was teach myself four basic chords and practice lots of songs involving those chords (G chord, C chord, E minor chord, D chord) then I would add another chord to the mix such as A chord. I kept this up until I had learned all my open chords. After that I moved on to the barred chords (F, for example.). After that I moved on to trying to solo, I really studied the frets and learned some good guitar solos I was able to find.
A lot of people, however, find a lot of success in learning through an instructor, which I would also suggest. They are usually trained professionals (or really really good at what they do) and can show you all the good techniques. Hope it helps!
I started guitar in march of 2008. Now, about 10 months later, i have never taken a lesson but (in my opinion and in the opinion of a bunch of other people) I now sound pretty darn good and am now dabbling in finger picking (which is really cool). I learned everything I have learned off the internet and a few family members that have been playing a while (although not that much from the family members). the main site that I used when i was just starting out was
http://guitar.about.com/library/blguitarlessonarchive.htm (put this in ur address bar and go to this site and u’ll find 11 lessons that will get you going. take your time.)
I only went to about lesson 3 or 4, but by then I knew the stuff really well and was able to go on my own. Hope that helps!
I know you wanted a free one but 30 bucks a month witch is less than one guitar lesson. the website is http://www.nextlevelguitar.com they have a free three day pass for now.
What ever you decide, get some instruction from a live person paid or free, but where they can see and hear your progress. That is the only way that mistakes are going to be caught early before they become serious or discouraging problems. The use of web sites is a bonus, but not the way improve your skills and definitely not the way to begin..
Remember that you might be able to teach yourself how to fly an airplane, but I would not want to fly with you. You might be able to teach yourself guitar, To learn some things you need a teacher.
Class lessons are cheaper than private and are almost as good. In some ways they are better, because you get to be around other players like your self.
You’ll want to begin with the free guitar lesson videos on this website. It’s simple and best of all, it’s free.
